What is an emergency first aid at work course?
An emergency first aid at work course (EFAW) is a 1 day, HSE-recognised qualification covering the life-saving basics - CPR, choking, severe bleeding and unresponsive casualties. It is valid for 3 years and suits lower-risk workplaces; higher-risk workplaces need the 3 day First Aid at Work course. First Aid For All runs public EFAW courses from £79 per person, and onsite UK-wide.

Emergency First Aid at Work Training Description
The HSE compliant 1 day Emergency First Aid at Work / EFAW training course must be a minimum of 6 hours training time to learn first aid with a mixture of theory, individual and group work, and practical sessions.
This course is accepted by the HSE and it is Level 3.
No prior knowledge or experience of first aid is required.
The course syllabus is as required under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
On successful completion, the learner will be recognised as an Emergency First Aider in the Workplace and will be able to:
- Choking: Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking.
- CPR & AED: Administer CPR, including the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
- Initial Assessment: Assess the situation and circumstances to act safely, promptly, and effectively in an emergency.
- Minor Injuries: Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries, including small cuts, grazes, bruises, minor burns (including electrical), scalds, and splinters.
- Role of the Emergency First Aider: Understand the role of the first aider, including reference to gaining consent, preventing cross-infection, recording incidents and actions, and using available equipment.
- Shock: Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock.
- Unresponsive Casualty: Administer first aid to a casualty who is unresponsive, including seizures.
- Wounds & Bleeding: Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding including severe bleeds and tourniquets.

What does an EFAW course cover?
Emergency First Aid at Work covers the life-saving basics: the role of the first aider and assessing an incident, CPR and defibrillator awareness, choking, severe bleeding, shock, minor injuries, and caring for an unresponsive casualty. It is 6 hours of training delivered in 1 day.
How long is an EFAW certificate valid?
An Emergency First Aid at Work certificate is valid for 3 years. The HSE recommends an annual refresher, and you should requalify before the 3 years are up.
Is EFAW enough for my workplace?
It depends on your first aid needs assessment. Lower-risk workplaces such as offices, shops and small businesses are usually covered by EFAW. Higher-risk workplaces, or those with a larger headcount, normally need the full 3 day qualification - see the 3 Day First Aid at Work (FAW) course.
