Frequently asked questions

How long is a first aid at work course?

The First Aid at Work (FAW) course is 18 hours of training, delivered over 3 days. The shorter Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is 6 hours over 1 day, and the FAW requalification course is 2 days.

How long does a first aid at work certificate last?

A First Aid at Work certificate is valid for 3 years. The HSE recommends annual refresher training, and you should book a 2 day FAW requalification course before your certificate expires - once it has lapsed you must sit the full 3 day course again.

What is the difference between EFAW and FAW?

EFAW (Emergency First Aid at Work) is a 1 day, 6-hour course covering the life-saving basics for lower-risk workplaces. FAW (First Aid at Work) is the 3 day, 18-hour course for designated first aiders in higher-risk workplaces and covers a much wider range of injuries and illnesses. Both certificates are valid for 3 years.

Which first aid course do I need?

It depends on your workplace first aid needs assessment:

  • 3 Day First Aid at Work (FAW) - 18 hours, for designated first aiders in higher-risk workplaces such as construction, manufacturing and warehousing. Valid 3 years. (This page.)
  • 1 Day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) - 6 hours, life-saving basics for lower-risk workplaces such as offices and shops. Valid 3 years.
  • 2 Day FAW Requalification - 12 hours, for renewing an existing FAW certificate before it expires.
