First Aid at Work Requalification training course

This is a 2 day/12 hour requalification course for people who hold the 3 day/18 hour First Aid at Work qualification.

IMPORTANT: Learners must have a valid First Aid at Work certificate that is within 3 months before expiry to 1 month after expiry.  Learners are requalified from the same date on the certificate +3 years so no time is gained or lost by coming back early or late.

NOTE: this course now includes the Emergency Paediatric First Aid course syllabus. The certificate is valid for both qualifications.


This first aid course complies with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) requirements as required under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. It covers all the most common serious illnesses and injuries that can occur in the work place.
The skills learnt on this course can help save lives at work, home, and at play.

It is HSE Compliant and FAIB Level 3.

On successful completion, the learner will be recognised as a First Aider in the Workplace and will be able to:

  • Role of the First Aider: Understand the role of the first aider, including gaining consent, preventing cross-infection, recording incidents and actions, and using available equipment.
  • Initial Assessment: Assess the situation and circumstances to act safely, promptly, and effectively in an emergency.
  • Unresponsive Casualty: Administer first aid to a casualty who is unresponsive, including seizures.
  • CPR & AED: Administer CPR, including using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Choking: Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking.
  • Wounds & Bleeding: Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding.
  • Shock: Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock.
  • Anaphylactic Shock: Administer first aid to a casualty with anaphylactic shock.
  • Burns & Scalds: Administer first aid to a casualty with burns (including electrical) and scalds.
  • Poisoning: Administer first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning.
  • Head, Neck & Back Injuries: Respond appropriately to head, neck and back injuries
  • Foreign Objects & Eye Injuries: Respond appropriately to foreign objects in the eyes, ears and nose, and eye injuries.
  • Bites & Stings: Respond appropriately to bites and stings.
  • Secondary Assessment: Administer a thorough head-to-toe examination of the casualty to identify signs of injury or illness, gather relevant history, and monitor signs to inform ongoing care
  • Musculoskeletal & Spinal Injuries: Administer first aid to a casualty with injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries.
  • Chest Injuries: Administer first aid to a casualty with chest injuries.
  • Extremes of Body Temperature: Provide appropriate first aid for extremes of body temperature.
  • Major Illnesses: Recognise the presence of major illnesses and provide appropriate first aid, including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes.
  • Minor Injuries: Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries, including small cuts, grazes, bruises, minor burns (including electrical), scalds, and splinters.

    Options: 100% Practical or End of Course Test and Practical

    Attendees on this course can be assessed by one of the following options:

    1. Practical assessment of key skills e.g. CPR and recovery position.
      Theory assessment by an end-of-course multiple choice test.
      A good option for staff who want a mix of practical and theory and who perform well with written tests.
    2. 100% practical assessment of all skills.
      There is no end-of-course test. Attendees must participate fully during the course.
      This assessment option should be considered for learners who enjoy practical work. It is a good option for learners who may not have English as a first language. Learners must still have a good understanding of spoken English.

    All learners on a course must be assessed using the same option.
