Fire marshal or fire warden - what is the difference?

Fire marshal and fire warden are largely interchangeable titles for the same workplace role: a trained person responsible for fire prevention checks and safe evacuation. First Aid For All runs a 1 day course that trains both, delivered onsite across Greater Manchester and nationwide.

Onsite Fire Safety Training in Manchester

We have been running public first aid courses across Greater Manchester since 2016. Our own training centre, Caroline House in Audenshaw, has hosted over 790 public courses, and we run regular scheduled courses at St Matthew’s Community Hall in Trafford and The Townhouse Hotel in Manchester city centre — more than 100 public dates are currently in the diary across those venues.

Because our centre is in the Manchester area, onsite training at your own premises is straightforward across the city and the surrounding boroughs: Tameside, Trafford, Salford, Stockport, Oldham and Bolton. We deliver first aid, fire safety and mental health first aid training locally, and being close by means we can usually accommodate short-notice bookings.

Frequently asked questions

Is fire marshal training a legal requirement?

In practice, yes. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to appoint a sufficient number of competent people to help carry out fire safety measures and evacuation. Fire marshal training is how most employers evidence that competence.

How often should fire marshal training be refreshed?

Typically every 3 years, and annually in higher-risk premises or wherever your fire risk assessment calls for it. Refresher training is also sensible after a change of premises, a change of role, or a poor evacuation drill.

What is the difference between a fire marshal and a fire warden?

There is no legal distinction - the two titles describe the same role. Some organisations use fire warden for the person who sweeps a floor or zone during an evacuation, and fire marshal for the person coordinating it at the assembly point, but the training is the same.

What does the fire marshal course cover?

The 1 day course covers fire safety law and the duties of the responsible person, common causes of workplace fire, the fire triangle and fire spread, fire risk assessment basics, extinguisher types and when each should be used, raising the alarm, and running a safe evacuation and roll call. Group and onsite pricing is quoted per course - contact us for a quote.
