On completion of training successful candidates will be able to:

Understand the role of the Emergency Paediatric First Aider including reference to:

The special needs of Infants and Children.
The importance of preventing cross infection.
The need for recording incidents and actions.
Plan for first aid emergencies.

Use of available equipment including Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).

Prioritise actions.

Recognise and respond appropriately to an infant who is unresponsive but breathing normally.

Recognise and respond appropriately to a child who is unresponsive but breathing normally.

Recognise and respond appropriately to an infant who is unresponsive but NOT breathing normally.

Recognise and respond appropriately to a Child who is unresponsive but NOT breathing normally.

Recognise and respond appropriately to an infant or child who is having a seizure.

Recognise and respond appropriately to an infant or child who is choking.

Recognise and respond appropriately to an infant or child who is bleeding.

Recognise and respond appropriately to an infant or child who is in shock.

Provide appropriate First Aid for minor injuries, small cuts, grazes and bruises.

Attendees on this course can be assessed by one of the following options:

1. Practical assessment of key skills e.g. CPR and recovery position.
   Theory assessment by an end-of-course multiple choice test.
   A good option for staff who want a mix of practical and theory and who perform well with written tests.
2. 100% practical assessment of all skills.
   There is no end-of-course test. Attendees must participate fully during the course.
   This assessment option should be considered for learners who enjoy practical work. It is a good option for learners who may not have English as a first language. Learners must still have a good understanding of spoken English.

All learners on a course must be assessed using the same option.
