Paediatric First Aid Training Description

Blended Paediatric Online First Aid Training Course 2 days/12 hours

Day 1: online first aid training, completed at your own pace.

Day 2: classroom first aid training, completed on a specific date.

IMPORTANT: the online first aid training should be completed before attending the classroom first aid course.

This course is accepted by, and compliant with, Ofsted and EYFS requirements.
Training providers must follow the Ofsted and Early Years guidance for their courses to provide the recommended level of first aid cover.
The course is recommended for people working with and caring for children and babies.


NOTE: this course also includes the 1 day Emergency First Aid at Work qualification to provide first aid cover for adults.

On completion of training successful candidates will be able to:

  • Understand the role of the first aider including reference to:
    - The special needs of Infants and Children
    - The ability and knowledge to carry out an illness assessment
    - The importance of preventing cross infection
    - The need for recording incidents and actions
     - Use of available equipment
  • Plan for first aid emergencies
  • Deal with emergencies
  • Deal with unconsciousness
  • CPR including using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Recognise and deal with shock
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to anaphylactic shock
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to electric shock
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to bleeding
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to cases of poisoning
  • Respond appropriately to burns and scalds
  • Respond appropriately to choking
  • Respond appropriately to fractures
  • Respond appropriately to head, neck and back injuries
  • Respond appropriately to foreign objects in eyes, ears and nose and eye injuries

Day 2 is 6 hours of classroom first aid training, completed on a specific date.

On successful completion, the learner will be recognised as a Paediatric First Aider and will be able to:

  • Anaphylactic Shock: Recognise and respond appropriately to anaphylactic shock.
  • Bites & Stings: Respond appropriately to bites and stings.
  • Burns & Scalds: Respond appropriately to burns and scalds.
  • Choking: Respond appropriately to choking.
  • CPR & AED: Administer CPR, including the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Electric Shock: Recognise and respond appropriately to electric shock.
  • Extremes of Body Temperature: Provide appropriate first aid for extremes of body temperature.
  • Febrile Convulsions: Respond appropriately to febrile convulsions.
  • Foreign Objects & Eye Injuries: Respond appropriately to foreign objects in the eyes, ears and nose, and eye injuries.
  • Fractures: Respond appropriately to fractures.
  • Head, Neck & Back Injuries: Respond appropriately to head, neck and back injuries.
  • Initial Assessment: Assess the situation and circumstances to act safely, promptly, and effectively in an emergency.
  • Major Illnesses: Recognise and respond appropriately to the emergency needs of chronic medical conditions, including epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes.
  • Minor Injuries: Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries, including small cuts, grazes, and bruises.
  • Poisoning: Recognise and respond appropriately to cases of poisoning.
  • Role of the Paediatric First Aider: Understand the role of the first aider, including gaining consent, addressing the special needs of infants and children, preventing cross-infection, recording incidents and actions, and using available equipment. Plan for first aid emergencies.
  • Serious Childhood Illnesses: Recognise and respond appropriately to meningitis, croup and sickle cell.
  • Shock: Recognise and deal with shock.
  • Unresponsive Casualties: Deal with unresponsive casualties.
  • Wounds & Bleeding: Recognise and respond appropriately to bleeding.

Assessment Type

Options: 100% Practical or End of Course Test and Practical

Attendees on this course can be assessed by one of the following options:

  1. Practical assessment of key skills e.g. CPR and recovery position.
    Theory assessment by an end-of-course multiple choice test.
    A good option for staff who want a mix of practical and theory and who perform well with written tests.
  2. 100% practical assessment of all skills.
    There is no end-of-course test. Attendees must participate fully during the course.
    This assessment option should be considered for learners who enjoy practical work. It is a good option for learners who may not have English as a first language. Learners must still have a good understanding of spoken English.

All learners on a course must be assessed using the same option.
