Understanding How Fires Start — Reference Guide

Understanding How Fires Start ?

To manage fire safety effectively, it’s important to understand how fires begin. Fires require three key elements, often referred to as the Fire Triangle.

? The Fire Triangle

A fire needs all three components to ignite and continue burning:

  • ? Heat – A source of ignition such as flames, sparks, or high temperatures.
  • ? Fuel – Any combustible material like paper, wood, chemicals, or flammable liquids.
  • ?️ Oxygen – Usually from the air around us.

Removing any one of these elements will prevent or extinguish a fire.

⚡ Common Ignition Sources in the Workplace

  • ? Electrical faults (damaged wiring, overloaded sockets)
  • ? Hot work (welding, cutting)
  • ? Smoking materials
  • ? Flammable liquids and vapors
  • ?️ Overheated machinery

➡️ How Fires Spread

Fires spread through:

  • ? Conduction – Heat traveling through solid materials.
  • ? Convection – Heat rising and spreading through air currents.
  • ? Radiation – Heat transferring through electromagnetic waves.
