Dislocation

Learn how to provide first aid for dislocated joints safely

A dislocation happens when a bone is forced out of its normal position at a joint (commonly shoulder, elbow, fingers, or knee).

Signs & Symptoms

  • ? Visible deformity (joint looks out of place)
  • ? Severe pain, especially with movement
  • ? Inability to move the joint
  • ? Swelling and bruising
  • ✋ Numbness, tingling, or weakness below the joint

Treatment

  1. ? Do Not Try to Push It Back
    • Forcing the bone back can cause severe damage.
  2. ❄️ Immobilise the Joint
    • Keep the joint in the position found.
    • Support with a sling, padding, or splint.
  3. ❄️ Apply a Cold Pack
    • Use ice wrapped in cloth for 15–20 mins to reduce swelling and pain.
  4. ? Get Medical Help
    • Call 999 if severe pain, deformity, or if the person cannot be safely moved.
    • Otherwise, go to A&E or urgent care.
  5. ? Do Not Give Food or Drink
    • In case surgery or sedation is needed.

Call 999 Immediately if...

  • Severe pain with no relief
  • Joint looks badly deformed
  • Loss of feeling, colour, or pulse in limb below the injury
  • Multiple injuries (after accident or fall)

Remember: Keep the casualty calm, support the injured joint, and get professional medical help quickly.
