Foreign Objects in the Nose — Reference Guide

Foreign Objects in the Nose

Learn how to safely manage nasal foreign objects and when to seek medical help.

? Signs & Symptoms

  • Difficulty breathing through one nostril
  • Nasal discharge (often smelly or bloody)
  • Swelling or pain
  • Whistling noise when breathing

✅ What to Do

  1. Encourage the person to breathe through their mouth.
  2. If the object is visible and not deeply lodged:
    • Ask them to blow gently out of the affected nostril while blocking the other.
  3. If this doesn’t work, seek medical help.

❌ Do NOT

  • Do not insert fingers or tools into the nose.
  • Do not try to remove the object blindly.
  • Do not let the person sniff deeply — it may push the object further in.

? General Tips

  • Always reassure the person and stay calm.
  • Wash your hands before and after treatment.
  • If in doubt — get medical help.
  • For children, always seek medical advice if an object is in their ear, nose, or eye.
