Foreign Objects in the Ear — Reference Guide

Foreign Objects in the Ear

Learn how to safely manage foreign objects in the ear and when to seek medical help.

? Signs & Symptoms

  • Ear pain or discomfort
  • Muffled hearing or a feeling of fullness
  • Drainage or bleeding (in serious cases)
  • A child may tug at their ear or be irritable

✅ Treatment

  1. Stay calm and keep the person still.
  2. If the object is clearly visible and not deeply embedded, gently tilt the head and try to let it fall out.
  3. For insects in the ear:
    • Gently pour warm (not hot) clean water or olive oil into the ear to float the insect out.
    • Tilt head to drain.
  4. If unsure, cover the ear loosely and seek medical advice.

❌ Do NOT

  • Do not insert cotton buds, tweezers, or any object into the ear.
  • Do not pour anything into the ear unless you're sure it's an insect.
  • Do not try to remove it if it causes pain.
