Sudden Poisoning

Recognize, treat, and prevent poisoning emergencies

Poisoning occurs when harmful substances are:

  • ? Swallowed
  • ?️ Inhaled
  • ? Injected
  • ? Absorbed through the skin

Common Causes of Poisoning

  • ? Medicines – overdose or mix-ups
  • ? Household chemicals – bleach, cleaning fluids
  • ? Plants and berries – especially dangerous to children
  • ☠️ Carbon monoxide – from gas heaters, faulty appliances
  • ? Food poisoning – bacteria, toxins
  • ? Alcohol & recreational drugs

? Signs & Symptoms

  • ? Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
  • ? Drowsiness, confusion, seizures
  • ? Breathing difficulties
  • ? Burns around the mouth
  • ? Unusual smells on breath or clothes
  • ? Collapse or unconsciousness

Treatment

? Stay Safe

  • Do not put yourself in danger
  • Ventilate the area if fumes or gas are present

? Call 999 Immediately

  • If the person is unconscious, having seizures, or breathing issues
  • Say it’s a suspected poisoning

? Gather Information

  • What substance? How much? When?
  • Look for bottles, packets, plants, or fumes nearby

? Do NOT Induce Vomiting

  • Can worsen the situation

? Remove the Poison

  • Swallowed: Rinse mouth. Don’t give food or drink unless advised
  • Inhaled: Move person into fresh air
  • On Skin: Remove contaminated clothing and rinse skin for 15+ minutes
  • In Eyes: Flush eyes with clean water for 10+ minutes

? Monitor and Reassure

  • Keep the person calm and still
  • Prepare to give CPR if they stop breathing

? Preventing Poisoning

  • ? Lock away medicines and chemicals
  • ? Use childproof containers
  • ? Install carbon monoxide detectors
  • ?️ Clearly label all substances
  • ? Educate children on the dangers

Special Note: Carbon Monoxide

  • Colourless, odourless, deadly gas
  • ⚠️ Symptoms: Headache, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness
  • ?‍♂️ Get fresh air immediately
  • ☎️ Call 999 and mention carbon monoxide poisoning
