? Shock

Recognize, treat, and respond to this life-threatening condition

Shock is a life-threatening condition where the body isn’t getting enough blood flow, depriving vital organs of oxygen.

? Causes

  • ? Severe bleeding (internal or external)
  • ? Major burns
  • ❤️ Heart problems (e.g., heart attack)
  • ? Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
  • ? Head, neck, or spinal injuries
  • ? Severe vomiting or diarrhoea
  • ? Infections (sepsis)

? Signs and Symptoms

  • ? Pale, cold, clammy skin
  • ?‍? Fast, shallow breathing
  • ? Rapid, weak pulse
  • ? Dizziness or fainting
  • ? Nausea or vomiting
  • ? Weakness or fatigue
  • ? Anxiety or restlessness
  • ? Blueness of lips or fingertips
  • Unconsciousness (late stage)

Treatment

  1. ? Call 999 or 112 – This is a medical emergency.
  2. ?️ Treat the cause if safe (e.g., control bleeding, treat burns).
  3. ? Lay the person down on their back.
    • ? Raise their legs (about 30 cm) unless injured.
  4. ? Keep them warm with a coat, blanket, or clothing.
  5. ? Do NOT give food or drink.
  6. Monitor breathing and responsiveness continuously.
  7. ?️ Reassure them and keep them calm and still.

If They Become Unconscious but Still Breathing

  • Place them in the recovery position
  • Keep checking breathing

If They Stop Breathing

  • ? Start CPR immediately
