Nose Bleed — Reference Guide

Nosebleed

A nosebleed (epistaxis) occurs when small blood vessels inside the nose break and bleed. It’s common and usually not serious.

Treatment

1. Keep Calm and Reassure

Especially for children – remain calm, speak gently, and explain what’s happening.

2. Sit Up and Lean Forward

  • Sit the casualty down (yourself or the child).
  • Lean them slightly forward – prevents blood from going down the throat, which could cause coughing or vomiting.

3. Pinch the Soft Part of the Nose

  • Use thumb and index finger to pinch just below the nasal bone, where the soft part begins.
  • Pinch firmly for 10 minutes without letting go.
  • Encourage breathing through the mouth.

4. Check After 10 Minutes

  • Release pressure gently.
  • If bleeding has stopped: monitor.
  • If it continues: pinch again for another 10 minutes.

❌ Do NOT

  • Tilt the head back – this can cause blood to flow into the throat.
  • Pick or blow the nose for several hours after bleeding stops.
  • Insert tissues or objects into the nostrils.

☎️ Seek Medical Help If:

  • The bleeding lasts more than 30 minutes.
  • It happens after a head injury.
  • There is frequent or recurring bleeding.
  • The child is under 2 years old and you're unsure.
  • The person feels faint, pale, or shows signs of shock.
