Role of the First Aider — Reference Guide

The Role of the First Aider

Key responsibilities and principles for providing safe and effective first aid.

1. Preserving Life

The first priority of a first aider is to preserve life by acting quickly and safely:

  • Ensure the scene is safe before approaching (Danger check).
  • Assess the casualty using DRABC (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation).
  • Call emergency services promptly if needed.
  • Provide life-saving interventions such as CPR or using an AED when required.
✅ Always prioritize safety for yourself and others before giving aid.

2. Preventing Cross-Infection

Cross-infection can spread diseases. Always follow hygiene practices:

  • Wash hands before and after giving first aid.
  • Use disposable gloves when dealing with bodily fluids (blood, vomit).
  • Use face shields or masks for rescue breaths (if applicable).
  • Dispose of used materials in a clinical waste bag or appropriate container.
✅ Protect yourself first — do not become a second casualty.

3. Promoting Recovery

After immediate dangers are managed, focus on promoting recovery until professional help arrives:

  • Place the casualty in the recovery position if unresponsive but breathing.
  • Monitor breathing and responsiveness continuously.
  • Keep the casualty warm and comfortable.
  • Reassure them and reduce anxiety.
  • Provide ongoing care and prevent further harm.
✅ Calm reassurance and monitoring can significantly aid recovery.

4. Obtaining Consent

Before providing first aid, gain consent where possible:

  • Conscious adult: Ask permission clearly (e.g., “I’m trained in first aid. Can I help you?”).
  • Unconscious or unresponsive: Consent is implied.
  • Children or infants: Obtain consent from a parent/guardian if present.
✅ Approach calmly and explain what you're doing.

5. Use of Available Equipment

First aiders should know how to use the equipment available and ensure it’s properly stocked.

✅ Check kits regularly to replace expired or used items.

6. Assess the Situation

First aiders should know the Primary Survey to act safely, promptly, and effectively in an emergency.

✅ See Primary Survey (DRABC)

7. Recording Incidents and Actions

Document all first aid interventions:

  • Use an accident report book or incident form.
  • Record date, time, casualty details, incident description, actions taken, and your signature.
  • Keep records confidential and compliant with data protection laws.
✅ Accurate records support continuity of care and legal protection.
