Severe Bleeds and Tourniquets — Reference Guide

Guidance on Tourniquets (UK)

When and how to use a tourniquet safely in severe bleeding situations

✅ When to Use a Tourniquet

  • Severe limb bleeding that cannot be controlled with direct pressure
  • In a massive bleed or trauma situation (e.g., industrial injury, road traffic collision)
  • If a wound is inaccessible or pressure is not effective (e.g., crushed limb, entrapment)

⚠️ Key Considerations

  • Use a commercial tourniquet (e.g., CAT or SOFTT), not improvised versions if possible
  • Apply 5–7 cm above the wound, avoiding joints
  • Tighten until bleeding stops — it will be painful
  • Note the time applied and communicate it to emergency services

❌ Do NOT

  • Loosen or remove the tourniquet once applied
  • Use tourniquets for non-life-threatening bleeding
